The Gasoline Mechanic is responsible for providing ongoing service, preventive maintenance work and repairs on a fleet of vehicles that includes vans used for vanpools and para-transit services and other support vehicles.  This position requires an experienced mechanic capable of performing complex diagnostic and repair work.


Responsibilities include (but not limited to):

  • Performing more complex diagnostic and repair work on Gasoline Engines, Transmissions, Electronic/Electrical, Driveline, Steering/Suspension, Brakes, Exhaust, Emissions and Hydraulic components.
  • Performing inspections and preventive maintenance services.
  • Using diagnostic scan tools to troubleshoot Check engine lights and drivability concerns on Electronic Engine/Emissions Control systems.
  • Repairing vans according to technical service bulletins and service/repair manuals.
  • Producing work orders using Assets Work, showing work performed, parts used, and vehicles serviced.
  • Inspecting for and reporting on vehicle damage such as torn seats, fluid leaks, dents, scratches etc.
  • Performing maintenance and repairs as required or as directed by the lead mechanic and Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Responding to road calls, diagnosing and repairs if possible, scheduling for tow service and loaner van if needed. 
  • Developing and maintaining communications and good rapport with Maintenance and Paratransit staff and vanpool drivers.
  • Supervising and negotiating the repair and service of vans with outside repair vendors to minimize unnecessary costs and repair delays.
  • Fully knowledgeable of and maintaining compliance with all Shop Safety and OSHA rules and regulations.
  • Ensuring proper use of safety tools and equipment at all times and understands the requirement for reporting Safety hazards and/or violations.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

This position requires a high school diploma or GED along with a good driving record and must have or be able to obtain a Class B Commercial Drivers License with a passenger endorsement.  The candidate must be able to meet the Department of Transportation physical requirements and maintain a DOT card.  Three years of proven gasoline powered vehicle experience with strong analytical and diagnostic skills are a requirement. Must have own tools. Individual must hold ASE Certifications in Brakes, Engine Repair, Electronic/Electrical, Steering/Suspension, Heating/Air Conditioning and Drive Train. Certificates in Section 609 of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 and performing both Safety and OBD II Emission Inspections in accordance with the State of NC Division of Motor Vehicle Regulations are a requirement.  Candidate must be proficient in the use of mechanic tools and various shop equipment, prior van maintenance experience and Ford Vehicle experience is preferred.  Good communicational skills and ability to work well with staff, vanpool customers and the outside maintenance providers is necessary along with the ability to report to work during Adverse Weather conditions. Salary range is $36,843-52,865 and a comprehensive benefits package is offered.
